ABOUT THIS EVENT

I

The Afro-Caribbean Mentorship Program (ACMP) in collaboration with THIS IS LA WADE and BLACK HISTORY MANITOBA will host its annual Women’s Empowerment Event themed ” Transcending Labels”. “Herstory: Transcending Labels” is an empowering event immersing attendees in the diverse journeys of women, particularly Black women, as they overcome societal expectations and triumph in various fields. This transformative platform fosters empowerment, recognizes triumphs, and amplifies voices that transcend conventional narratives.

The heart of the event lies in the cultural exploration of “Hairstories” quilting and beading traditions. Interactive workshops with Dark Shugar provide practical insights into Black hair care, styling traditions, and the cultural significance embedded in hairstyles. The exploration extends to the profound meaning of waist beads within African culture and the resurgence of Indigenous beadwork and resurgence, the event features quilting as a powerful symbol of unity, economic empowerment, and artistic expression within the Black community. Quilting cards guide attendees through the history, from theorized Underground Railroad codes to the significance of quilting bees as spaces for creativity and community building. —a cultural tapestry woven with a commitment to transcending labels and embracing diversity.

In addition to these engaging workshops, the event features a short film screening, adding a visual dimension to the celebration. Attendees will witness a comedic, yet thought-provoking film that resonates with the theme of transcending societal expectations and explores the multifaceted experiences of women, especially Black women. Following the screening, a Q&A component provides a space for deeper reflection and discussion about the theme of ‘Transcending Labels’, allowing the audience to actively participate, share insights, and connect the film’s themes to their own experiences. This interactive element enriches the event, fostering meaningful dialogue and creating connections between the narratives presented on screen and those lived by attendees.

In-person and Zoom

Zoom technologies will be available for those who are unable to attend in-person

This event will encourage our Black communities and non-Black communities to speak with one another while asking folks to appreciate our vulnerabilities. The ask from everyone is to establish and maintain solidarity among people in our Black community and those of different races, ethnicities, sexualities, genders, ages, and any social characteristics a person subscribes to.
