Navigating your emotions after a breakup can be overwhelming for many Black women. The journey to recovery and emotional healing is a process that requires patience, and for many, the support of therapy or a trusted sister who understands and values our vulnerabilities is not always available. Stereotypical perceptions of Black women often depict them as emotionless and immune to pain, which strips them of their vulnerability and softness. This deprives them of the sense of humanity that comes with the ability to heal and express feelings. While others are given space to feel, reflect, and grow, Black women are too often overlooked and not given space to heal.

So, what can be done to change the narrative about Black women and their requirement to heal, particularly after a romantic breakup?

On August 15th, 2025, the Salon Talk, a spin-off of the popular Barbershop Talks Series, will host its first two-hour event aimed at providing Black women and girls a space to openly explore what it means to heal and be vulnerable after a romantic breakup. This community-focused gathering seeks to challenge the misconception that Black women and girls do not experience physical and emotional pain. The Salon Talk promotes the idea that being “uncomfortable to get comfortable” is essential for honest dialogue that fosters trust, connection, healing, and sisterhood. Through these conversations, we take steps toward dismantling harmful myths about Black women and girls.
