Description of the play

Theatre of the Oppressed, influenced by the work of Augusto Boal. The public-facing performance purposely addresses social oppression(s), which will be displayed through performing arts. Theatre of the Oppressed is a theatrical game in which a problem, or a symptom of oppression, is shown in an unsolved form. Dramatic action will revolve around a selected issue of social inequality involving visible oppressors and an oppressed protagonist. We invite you to join these plays to be a voice against social oppression.

This theatre consists of 2 performances:

Play 1:

This performance is about a teacher named Ms. Whitlock, who lets her own biases and blind spots get in the way of understanding her students who are being treated unfairly. As different forms of oppression happen in her classroom, she makes comments that quietly hurt the same students she thinks she is helping.

Play 2:

This performance explores the normalization of hate in a Canadian high school context, focusing on how subtle and overt acts of discrimination, such as racism, homophobia, and xenophobia, become embedded in everyday interactions. Through students’ experiences, it reveals how hate is often dismissed or tolerated within peer groups, institutional structures, and social media, contributing to a culture of exclusion and silence.
