ABOUT THIS EVENT

Black men and boys continue to lead their lives with limited culturally sensitive, professional mental health support, where many of them are left not addressing various concerns, such as depression and anxiety. Anti-Black Racism tied with gender biases about Black masculinities has served to create mental strain where many Black men and boys do not recognize their value and gain a sense of feeling unaccepted in their communities. Mainstream society’s normalization and misconception of Black men and boys and their mental concerns are too often unrecognized, leaving many of them to deal with social tension and unaddressed trauma on their own, which implicates their ability to lead mentally healthy lives.

On Monday, January 29th, 2024, between 6p and 8:30p, The Barbershop Talks series will host a two-hour in-person (limited guests) at Swish Barbershop located in the University Centre – University of Manitoba. The program continues to bring awareness to addressing mental health concerns in our Black community.

The Winnipeg-based initiative will be hybrid- in-person and Zoom technologies. The event focuses on providing Black community members and the broader community with the opportunity to talk about mental health issues openly and safely with mental health professionals by creating a safe space for Black people of different and respected lived experiences.  We also encourage people from different ethnic backgrounds to connect with experts in the field. We strive to empower people by granting them access to tools and resources that allow them to seek help but know how to access help. Additionally, we work towards raising awareness about the broad spectrum of mental health issues that affect the Black community and reducing the stigmas associated with mental illness. This can include promoting positive behaviours, encouraging people to seek help, and inspiring others to consider their emotional well-being. The reality for Black men and the broader Black community is that the Barbershop is a safe haven for many Black people to feel a sense of respectability in a safe environment.

This event encourages an “uncomfortable to get comfortable” dialogue, asking difficult questions and encouraging widespread participation. The aim is to arrive at strategies that would support Black young men and boys, along with the broader Black community, in seeking help with mental health concerns.
