Report: Changing the Narrative – Using entertainment to locate and discuss our traumas

On Friday, January 22nd 2020, the ACMP hosted its fourth Mental Health Month event that focused on using entertainment to identify traumas experienced by the Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) community. This event used 2 separate short films to identify and expose how members of the ACB community are portrayed and traumatized for the sake of entertainment. The screening of each short film was followed by a significant discussion that allowed attendees to contribute to the conversation and discuss how entertainment affects those in the Black community.

These discussions were a powerful reminder of the need for access to resources within the ACB community, in addition to the need for a safe space for the community to address the trauma they experience. This event was well attended and engaged several members of the audience. Once the final discussion concluded, a list of mental health resources was provided.
