Report: Check in – Anxiety and Depression

On Wednesday, January 20th 2020, the ACMP hosted its third Mental Health Check-In focused on discussing anxiety and depression in the Afro-Caribbean Black (ACB) community. This event discussed the challenges that ACB community members face when dealing with anxiety and depression.. The keynote address and discussion were led by Tracy Charles: a mental health specialist from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

Her keynote address discussed how anxiety is experienced differently in the ACB community, and how Black people have more chronic and intense symptoms compared to their white counterparts. She also discussed ways in which you can address your mental health concern and had an open discussion with participants about how to recognize the impact of anxiety and depression. Once the discussion concluded, participants thanked Tracy for participating in the nights event and a list of mental health resources was provided to those who wished to seek more information.
